Izak Benbasat is a professor of Sauder School of Business at University of British Columbia, a member of the Order of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (Academy of Social Sciences), and a member of the Science Academy (Bilim Akademisi) of Turkey. He was awarded the University of British Columbia Killam Research Prize in 1998 and the University of British Columbia Killam Teaching Prize in 1996. He received the Senior Research Prize of the Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia, in 2003 and in 2015. He was CANFOR Professor of Management Information Systems from 1991 to 2001, and CANADA Research Chair in Information Technology Management from 2001 to 2014. He became a fellow of the Association for Information Systems (AIS) in 2002 and was given the LEO Award for Lifetime Exceptional Achievements in Information Systems from AIS in 2007. He received the INFORMS (The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences) Information Systems Society Distinguished Fellow Award in 2009.
Professor Benbasat was invited to spend the 1985-6 academic year at the Harvard Business School as a Marvin Bower Fellow. He was Cycle & Carriage Visiting Professor, National University of Singapore, in 1995; Hooker Distinguished Visiting Professor, McMaster University in 1996 and 2003; Shaw Visiting Professor, National University of Singapore, in 2000; and the Otto Monsted Guest Professor at the Copenhagen Business School in 2015.
Professor Benbasat was editor-in-chief of Information Systems Research, the Editor of the Information Systems & Decision Support Systems Department of Management Science, and a Senior Editor of the MIS Quarterly. He was conference, program and doctoral consortium chair, or co-chair, for the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) and for the Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS). He co-chaired the 2016 European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) in Istanbul.
Abstract:
The talk will be about Professor Izak Benbasat’s personal journey in academia. He will describe the research work conducted over a 50-year span, the contributions of his many doctoral students to these research projects, and the academic and service (journal) responsibilities he has had. Professor Benbasat will conclude his talk with the lessons he has learned over this long academic journey. Based on the lessons learned, he will also offer some advice to the young scholars in the audience about what he believes leads to success in academia. After the formal presentation, up to 30 minutes will be allocated to answering questions from the audience.
